WESTON Maisie

Congratulations to Maisie Weston
Winner of the NAIDOC Perth 2017
Female Elder of the Year Award

Maisie Weston (nee Loo) is a 90-year-old Noongar Wagyl Kaip Elder who has always been a strong and dedicated advocate for social justice for Aboriginal people, as evidenced in her many years work with Aboriginal community based organisations whilst at the same time raising her eight children. Maisie overcame experiences of hardship and deprivation as a child growing up at Gnowangerup, Moore River and Carrolup Native Settlements. She worked as a Field Officer with the first Aboriginal Legal Service in Perth and with the Nyandi Women’s Prison during the 1970s, where she enjoyed working with the women and was able to advocate strongly on their behalf. Even as Maise moved into older age, people would still ring her requesting advocacy and advice. The experience of travelling to Durban, South Africa representing the Elders Council with Mr Norman Harris (RIP) to attend an Aged Care Conference was a huge honour and responsibility, a challenge she took in her stride.

MAISIE WESTON (nee Loo)                     #1

Maisie returned from South Africa with a renewed vigour after learning about apartheid and social Justice in Africa and of the hardships of the people in that country. Through many cultural events Maisie has been included and invited to as an Elder since, such as the Noongar Dialogues with Yirra Yaakan and the when the Giants were brought to Perth, Maisie maintained her position as an Elder with great dignity.
This event would not be possible without our sponsors, special thanks to Platinum sponsor Cleanaway, and award sponsors: the Housing Authority, Aboriginal Health WA, the Department for Child Protection and Family Support, St John of God, Hancock Prospecting and Roy Hill, Equity Trust, Perpetual Trust, INPEX, and the Australian Childhood Foundation.
